Celebrating twenty-five years of pastoral experience, Dr. Joseph E. Woods is the current and seventh pastor of the Saint Phillips Baptist Church of Hamilton, New Jersey, which was established in 1920. With a decade of service to Saint Phillips, the church has experienced significant spiritual, fiscal, and numerical growth under his progressive and prophetic oversight. The church has become more diverse under his leadership and continues to be a great beacon throughout the community.
His servant leadership extends beyond the church. He is a viable, vocal, visible, and visionary leader in Hamilton, NJ and beyond. He is well-respected across religious, social, economic, educational, and political spectrums. He leadership in Hamilton, in particular, is extensive. He serves as an advisor to the current, democratic mayor of Hamilton in the area of Community Development and Non-Profit work, and served the previous, republican mayor as an advisor in the area of Economic Development while receiving bi-partisan support to become a commissioner on the Hamilton Township Economic Development Advisory Commission. He is current Chairman of the District Community Relations Committee for the Hamilton School District and past Board President of the John O. Wilson Community Center. He formerly served as Civil Rights Commissioner of Montclair, NJ , Housing Authority Commissioner for Morris County, NJ, and Founder/Executive Director of the Eagle’s Community Empowerment Center that included providing services to students with long-term suspension from local public schools in Vance County, NC. He is the Founder and Moderator of the Higher Ground Association of Baptist Churches, Inc., and has served the General Baptist Convention of NJ, with honor and distinction, as Executive Assistant to the President, General Secretary, and State Director of Christian Education. He has served as an instructor to the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, and also served on three boards with the National Baptist Convention. In addition, Pastor Woods has over forty spiritual sons and daughters in the gospel ministry, with nearly a dozen of them serving as pastors in New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, and Georgia.
Dr. Woods holds four earned collegiate degrees, all with honors, culminating with a Doctorate of Biblical Studies in Biblical Counseling in 2007 where his dissertation focused on how to reach “street-smart youth” with nouthetic counseling. He has also authored three books.
God’s hand is upon the life of Joseph E. Woods as witnessed through his many awards and accomplishments, as well as the multitudes touched by his life, ministry, and service. He is a native of Montclair, New Jersey and now resides in Columbus, New Jersey with his wife Heather; they have four children and one grandchild.
